Magnesium for Sleep: Glycinate vs Citrate vs Oxide vs Melatonin (What Actually Helps at 3am)
Four things sold for sleep. Only one is built for the second half of the night. Here’s the honest comparison, with what the research does and doesn’t say.
First, which problem do you have?
There are two sleep problems, and they need different things.
- Can’t fall asleep, lying awake at 11: melatonin and sleep hygiene have a real role.
- Fall asleep fine, wake at 3 and can’t get back: melatonin does little, and the question becomes which form of magnesium, at what dose.
If you’re a woman over 38, this second kind is often the first sign of perimenopause, years before periods change. This page is about that one.

The comparison.
| Magnesium glycinate | Magnesium citrate | Magnesium oxide | Melatonin | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Magnesium bound to glycine (chelated) | Magnesium bound to citric acid | Magnesium + oxygen, the cheapest form | A hormone, not a mineral |
| Absorption | High | Good | Low | n/a |
| Effect on stomach | Gentle | Laxative at sleep doses | Laxative, common in “PM” blends | None |
| Sedating? | No. Supports the body’s own settling | No | No | Yes, signals “start sleeping” |
| Built for | Staying asleep, the second half of the night | Constipation, mostly | Cheap label filler | Falling asleep, jet lag |
| Morning after | Nothing to shake off | Bathroom | Bathroom | Fog in some people, especially at 5 to 10 mg |
| Research for sleep | 2025 RCT, 155 adults, bisglycinate: insomnia scores lower than placebo, small effect | Little sleep-specific data | Little sleep-specific data | Good for sleep onset; weak for staying asleep |
| In The Night Formula | 275 mg elemental, from 2,500 mg | No | No | No |
The Night Formula
Magnesium glycinate, and nothing else. Built for women in perimenopause, for the 3am wake-up.
- 275 mg elemental magnesium, from 2,500 mg glycinate
- The full amount on the label, no proprietary blend
- No melatonin, nothing to shake off at 7
- 3 capsules, 30 minutes before bed
Why glycinate, in one paragraph.
Glycine is itself a calming amino acid: in a small 2007 study, 3 g of glycine before bed improved how people rated their sleep quality versus placebo. Bind magnesium to it and you get a form that’s absorbed well, doesn’t run through you, and doesn’t knock you out.
For a wake-up that happens after four hours of sleep, “doesn’t knock you out” matters: you want support through the night, not a hammer at 11.
Why the dose on the label matters more than the name.
Many bottles say “magnesium glycinate 2,000 mg.” That’s the weight of the compound, not the magnesium. The elemental magnesium in 2,000 mg of glycinate is around 200 mg. Studies on sleep use 250 to 500 mg elemental. If the label doesn’t say “elemental,” you don’t know what you’re taking.
The Night Formula prints both: 2,500 mg magnesium glycinate, 275 mg elemental magnesium (65 % DV), per 3 capsules. No proprietary blend.

What the research doesn’t say.
No trial has shown magnesium cures fragmented sleep. A 2023 systematic review found a link in observational studies and called the randomised trials contradictory. The largest trial to date, 155 adults in 2025, found a small effect.
That’s the size of it, and that’s why Noxane gives 90 nights on opened bottles rather than a promise.
One email, full refund, nothing to ship back, and you keep the guide.
Who this is for.
Women in perimenopause who fall asleep fine and wake at 3. Not for the 11pm problem; melatonin is honest work there.
Three capsules 30 minutes before bed, same time every night, and one question to judge it by: when you woke up, did you get back to sleep?
The Night Formula comes with It’s Not In Your Head: The 3am Guide, a 10-minute audio for the moment your eyes open, and the 90-night guarantee.
Founding batch. This is Noxane’s first production run. From $37 a month on the 240-Night Reset, paid once, nothing renews.
