Our Standards

Most of this category hides. We would rather publish the parts that are usually left off the label.

The dose is on the front

400 mg elemental magnesium, as magnesium glycinate, per two-capsule serving. Front of the bottle, not buried in a supplement facts panel on the back.

The industry standard is a “proprietary blend”: a list of impressive-sounding ingredients with one total weight, so you cannot tell whether there are 400 mg of the active or 40. We do not use blends. There is one active ingredient and you can see how much of it you are getting.

Why glycinate

Magnesium comes bonded to different carriers, and the carrier decides how much you absorb and how your gut reacts. Oxide is the cheapest and the least absorbed. Citrate is absorbed better and is known for sending people to the bathroom. Glycinate is bonded to glycine, is well tolerated, and is the form people in this category name on their own.

What is deliberately absent

  • Melatonin. Already tried, already abandoned. It shifts when you fall asleep, which was never your problem, and it is what leaves you groggy.
  • Valerian, 5-HTP, St. John’s wort. All three interact with antidepressants. A large share of the women we are built for are taking one, often prescribed for this exact complaint.
  • Wild yam, black cohosh. The first does not convert to progesterone in the human body regardless of what the marketing says. The second has documented rare liver toxicity.
  • Anything implied to be hormonal. We explain hormones. We do not sell them.
